This short film was produced especially for the MLO TV Minelab Competition Channel. It was designed as an introduction for new detectorists considering the use of the Minelab X-Terra 70 as a practical & easy-to-use Prospecting tool.
Thanks. I've only done 2D material myself in the past and strangely, this is my FIRST 3D footage for which I made all the textures and Mattes myself. 95% of the textures were made just for this video. I had to obtain a book to quickly learn how to move the virtual "camera" and create tracking for the objects. Those 3D coils are my first attempt at real 3D modeling. The first Earth shot took nearly 3 days of non stop rendering. Even the Minelab logos were scratch-built because there was nothing online that was sharp enough to use.
We used two cameras. A 2004 Canon Powershot for the low quality lizard footage and all the still pictures. The smoother video footage towards the end was filmed with a dying 2004 Canon mini-Dv camera. Those tiny spots in the lower left quarter are damaged pixels from a laser pointer IR radiation leak mishap... and the camera battery was so old that we had to shoot very carefully in order to capture everything with just 7 minutes of battery life. We had to drive the whole way out there just to film that minute of footage to compliment the video. My biggest fear was that there would be no gold where we looked or that it would be snowing (it's subzero there right now). Everything else was shot in summer.
Forgot to mention: The sound effects were made by recording my X-Terra 70 and a friends GPX-4000 speakers with a microphone ...and then tweaking the sounds in "Garageband". The same program was used to create the music for the video. The film was then edited in "iMovie" in three chunks. Hope to upgrade soon to the current version which handles HD widescreen format. The 3D video shots were made using a $99 program called "Bryce 6" (yes, I own it legitimately). The 3D modeling was done in Maya - which I couldn't figure out how to light, animate & render properly... so I exported the models and then rendered the footage in Bryce.
I chose not to include some of the nastier looking critters in the video. We do get stung and bitten by a few critters out there from time to time. The wasps and inch long ants have declared war on me. Even the snakes have come close to finishing me off but I can never get to the camera in time when I bump into them. Has a VERY close call on two occasions.
Great video. This is what I do and those are the coils I use. I live and MD in Colorado. Not much ancient stuff but still lots to find. And a little gold flour now and then.
Well Done! I can clearly see why you won with the amount of effort that was put into this video. If you ever need a job in that industry, this should definitely be in your portfolio! I enjoyed watching your video, and learning some very interesting things about one of my favorite countries as a kid. -Brett (USA)
