Thread: Nighthawks step up raids on buried treasure

Re: Nighthawks step up raids on buried treasure

jon ...been unsure of the law does not equate to what the paper said about him - he had permission and had declared finds - even had some given back to him in the past ( i suspect theres a grudge against him - and the fact he looks to be very successful better than the archeologists who study and have more resource at their fingertips than most) - dont they check these areas and have their own teams?? what are they researching ? missing alot of significant places based on the article in your link thats for sure.

theres alot of jealousy afoot here - the archeologists need to embrace detecting and work with detectorists not keep slinging mud - its the only way to regulate it properly.
i suspect 90% of dectectorists are not totally clued up on the laws - theres more crooks in the media / journalism than there is with detectors and also dont forget most stuff in the British Museums is pinched from other countrys.

he's won his case ....that should settle anyones concerns.

Kyle it says in the article that he sold his job lot of finds in a pub for 10,000 pounds and that he didn't understand the law on reporting finds.this is what i find questionable when as you said he had reported finds in the past??

Re: Nighthawks step up raids on buried treasure

jon ....hes won is case from articles been incorrect - we cant believe all we read mate ----the law found him innocent.

im not disagreeing with you that underhanded things go on and neither am i saying ignorance equates to innocence .....but where the facts were tested ..he was found innocent.
    the rest is speculation mate

i wouldnt believe anything printed in the popular press, those people are parasites who feed of others misfortune and once they have done the damage they move on to the next unfortunate sod.
it is not for me to pass judgement, that is down to the courts but what i do think is that had he been found guilty then the shadow of suspicion would have been cast on all detectorist as the gutter press are good at tarring people with the same brush.

    Just read your comment!
Please don't comment on something you know nothing about. You don't know me or what finds I have recorded, found, or donated. What you do know about me is the total load lie's written about me in the Sunday Times Newspaper, which I was awarded damages in there thousands and not the hundreds...... So when you know more than I do please do comment otherwise put a sock in it!!!
Very kind regards Mark Wilkinson x

willywilkie, you've obviously been through the wringer and come out the other side smelling of roses, but there isn't any reason to use threatening words to MLOs in this debate, who haven't quite understood that the article was slanderous. Therefore, nothing else written by that journalist or any others jumping in and embellishing this story further, can be believed.
Perhaps you can now tell us exactly how this all came about.

Fantastic thread, dont agree with nighthawking, but Mark wilkinson got found inocent brilliant. What artifacts got sold, if they were bronze then not a problem, if silver and gold then should be declared. As long as they dont lose their provenance. I act on behalf of the farmer as well as myself, so they shouldnt call us greedy detectorists or thiefs, if it wasnt for detectorists then most artifacts and coins would be destroyed by farm machinery. But they would rather they did get destroyed than us detectorists have them. And yes I do sometimes sell my stuff legally, but at least people that collect them can enjoy them instead of them being partifacts. We all love our history and no we are not greedy, unfortunatly todays society revolves around money, and there is always a price to pay, so that people can support their families. My farmers are all for it, 50/50 find share agreement, WELL DONE MARK WILKINSON, (found inocent by the law of the land, good enough for me)

Your comments are fine; nothing wrong with debate, even fiery debate, as long as there's no slander, personal attacks, insults, etc.

I don't enjoy getting riled up about nighthawking, but I do....

rupert murdoch ...in my view should be in jail with his son and the rest of the crooks that work for him - they specialise in destroying lives, creating wars with their propaganda - the corruption that has already been proven to my mind showing them in cahoots with the government and uk police should have been enough to cause an uprising in this country - they disgust me !

Pat ..everybody knows the stance of Minelab forum - it will not tolerate nighthawking and holds a honorable position on trying to ensure metal detecting is carried out in a responsible and law abiding manner - this forum does everthing to promote that and you should be proud of that.

but sometimes it is very necessary for the little man to fight back against such smears and i am also proud of this man who took on the murdoch propaganda teams, which must have been stressful and such an uphill task and showed them again for what they do best ...LIE.

Hello Mark. You've won your case, which I'm really pleased about. Now chill out.... roll a fag and have a pint or 10. Everything is OK now, so no need to fight your own kind. We are the minority and need each other to keep this hobby going, so I ask again. How did your name get dragged through a national newspaper in the first place?
Ps glad I made you laugh.

goldfinger - why dont you ask the newspaper? like you say we should band together and the guy has been found innocent and should now be left in peace.
williewilkie ..you have been found innocent and dont need to explain anything - the courts have done that with there verdict.

Re: Nighthawks step up raids on buried treasure

jon - he was responding to the thread that had the posted article - i would presume to illustrate that it was inaccurate...and has given his side of the story .....he took them to court and was found Innocent.
i gather from his reply to your post - that he wants to put it behind him now ... remember he has been to court and been cross-examined and found innocent....that would have been a stressful time for anyone ..taking on the might of the murdoch mafia.

now is the time to move on - jon how would you feel if you had been found innocent in a court of law and yet people still question your integrity - its not as if you asked in a polite manner for his side of the story - rather questioned him further on his innocence.
to me that is not right - i am only giving you my take on how it reads ....ultimately you can do as you choose ..all i would say is try and put yourself in the guys shoes and what he has been put through.

its just my view ..everybody is entitled to theirs ....but one thing cannot be in doubt and that is the verdict.

He won damages for being called a night hawk scavenger didnt he,that doesn't make the whole story rubbish. The times even amended the article which is here..http://www.archaeologydaily.com/news...-treasure.html
what im questioning is that he told reporters that he was ignorant when reporting finds but in his statement from his lawyers he says he has always sought to abide by the Treasure Act 1996. http://www.jmw.co.uk/services-for-yo...damages-times/

Re: Nighthawks step up raids on buried treasure

heres one paragraph from the article in bold .....Wilkinson has also been secretly digging at a new site at night - with the landowner's permission, he said - which he believes is that of an undiscovered Roman temple.

i dont like pulling just single paragraphs from an article because you lose context - but if you like we can disect the article in full .....i'll start with the above paragraph to illustrate a point......to me its an oxymoron - ...... i would ask ...how can he be "secretly" digging with the landowners permission?

you see jounalists are taught to write in a way - that can suggest events to be different to reality without "technically been untrue" its a form of propaganda and is widely spread practice to help sensationlize something.

if you want to start to disect more of the articale to debate i am happy to do that - you raise valid questions i feel but based on what could be misinformation and therefore a non - starter to me.

its definately good stuff to debate aslong as the wider context is seen ......and that is the article had to be changed because it was incorrect and ultimately told lies...for me that is the focus.
