    X-terra settings

The settings that i use when out detecting are,
    7.5 khz DD 10" coil.
    All Metal.
    2 Tones.
Sensitivity as high as i can get away with, without the machine going irratic.
    Volume to max.
    Threshold to number 10.

I then auto ground balance and noise cancel..

Whilst searching,i listen for any low/high tones. The high tones are easy to tell over the low blatts of the iron.
Where i do get a high/low tone.I then watch the meter. If the numbers are jumping from anywhere above 2 to below -2,i'll then dig these targets..I have tried this system on a couple of outtings and discovered buttons and coins ..These are always deep..The targets must be so deep, that the tone I/D has trouble locking onto them ,hence the mixed tone.I have also found this with the 10" 18.75 DD coil as well..
I now always dig these signals..

The other mode that i've been using is the Prospecting mode..This is another mode that i like..If you have trouble pinpointing with the standard pinpoint mode, you should try the PM.This is very sensitive and can lock onto the target with ease..
With the P.M mode,i listen for only the clean 2 way tone.Anything broken is mostly iron..I also check the target then in pattern 1 or all metal..I again listen to the response and if there is a high tone,or even a few scratchy high tones, then i also dig these targets..
I did find a very small piece of silver paper whist doing this, and it was quite deep.
I would have missed this target whilst in any of the other modes ,as the response was so weak..It could have been a hammered etc..
I hope my report will be of some use to other users of this machine..
    It's a great machine..

Seems there are always things to learn a machine even a machine as basic as an X.Terra . I will consider these settings and info when i use mine on land.
    Thanks.

Thanks for the tips Trigger. I have the 705 and pretty much go along with your settings. To be honest though, I've never tried the pinpoint thing as I have always managed to find my target with the basic settings and a probe. Cheers again for taking the time to set out your settings.

its ease of use can easily be seen as a "basic" machine ......its not ........its a very very good machine and simplicity in such a powerful machine makes it useable for all - this unit is a pro machine no doubt there...............totally underrated due to fbs mainly spoke about here......in my view its the best machine minelab make for general everyday detecting.

Totally agree with you Kyle, ease of use does not make a machine basic. How many people come on this forum struggling to get a machine to perform, give up and sell. There are some top detector's out there without having to go for so called top of the range imo. Most are looking for one or two program's to use most of the time which is what you get with the Terra range and other machine's which are easier to use. Most detector's in the right hand's are great, some bite off more than they can chew.

Being new to hobby, I am very happy with the 705 so far and have found the learning curve very acceptable. As I make adjustments and learn how the machine performs it is not confusing to me. I agree if I would have went right to a ctx I would probably get frustrated, just reading what and how the ctx is capable of is confusing to me. Most of that is because of my inexperience with detecting I think and the 705 to me is a great machine to get into the hobby. if I am not finding stuff with the 705 it will not be the machines fault.

I set mine about the same way using the same coil but threshold at 5 and using 3 tones in the all metal mode.
