    Embarrassed

    CTX 3030
Our club was asked by a person to come onto his land to find an in ear digital hearing aid that had been lost.

We agreed to go and look today.

He had the matching hearing aid from the other ear so we could see what it looked like.

The hearing aid obviously contains some small amount of metal for microphone, circuit, speaker as well as a miniature silver oxide battery.

I asked the owner to put it on the ground so I could get a signal and then try and match it with hopefully the other hearing aid.

Anyway my mighty ctx did not detect it at all, no a bleep, pulse, nada, he took out the battery so i could see that and check signal, again nothing.

My probe picked it up when near it without a problem.

My mates with old tesoro basic detectors could get a signal, all be it a weak one.

I have mine in all metal mode, auto sensitivity, deep etc

No doubt I will be butt of jokes for months by my "mates"

In the end none of use found the lost hearing aid but I am surprised I could not pick a signal up at all.
Last week I found a earring back which I know is solid silver and really small.

    Any thoughts ?

Probably because of the crap metal used in the battery??

Was the "ear ring" back in the ground or a surface find?
Well since the hearing aid was not found by the others or you it shows that just because it picked it up in the air does mean that you can find it without walking over it.

The earring back was in the sand.

The hearing aid we put on top of soil.
You think the ctx's are expensive, these digital hearing aids are more !
    Daren't bury that one.

I am surprised that the ctx did not pick it up at all.

    Re: Embarrassed

This does not surprise me at all and if you know anything about how the minelabs work you will know that they do not allway,s pick up Very tiny metalic parts especialy Nikel and alloys in air.
I once put the Etrac over a modern 20p piece and not a signal.
Now on the other hand go detecting and use the machine normaly then yes you will get that 20p piece and or that tiny bit of alloy.
The Ctx will do this even better than the Etrac.
Nothing to be embarrased about its just the way they work.

Thats true I have two hearing aids and it like wearing a CTX on each ear. £1995 each ouch!!

Tried my CTX with the aids and they sounded out no problem.

When it's really small I'd pick up the GPX any day.

    Re: Embarrassed

Robin, why didn't you try it in manual sens at different levels?
Why Waste time using an ordinary detector when you have the option to own a CTX3030.

    Hindsight is wonderful :-)

To be honest I thought auto sensitivity would give me the best available.

    Re: Embarrassed

My hearing aids come in at 11:46 on readout. Run at 30 sens manual. Depth on soil surface basically air test about 1". I took the battery out and nothing so you are looking for the battery not the aid. Not enough metal in the aid itself.

    Interesting, thanks mal.

I have a similar micro battery similar to the hearing aid lost and will try that later today if I get time.

    Re: Embarrassed

I tested the battery I have (a very small seiko silver oxide cell for small watch).

In auto sensitivity I get nothing.
In manual sensitivity I get a signal but its all over the place. No target ID lock at all.

    Re: Embarrassed

my theory and i say theory because thats what it is.

the machine is not "all metal" even when you think its in "all metal" - i believe the parameters have been marginally clipped by the minelab engineers and thats why you dig less rubbish, less seceptible to coke/ mineralisation etc than true "all metal machines" - i believe this to be why he struggles with small gold too.

i guess its a trade off

    Re: Embarrassed

I have found bits smaller than any watch battery that I have ever seen. The E-trac and most likely the CTX need to see the item in the ground.
Sure it is a disadvantage if you are looking for a lost hearing aid or battery that you dropped but then again these are "treasure detectors". You want to sweep the surface and find the fresh dropped hearing aids and watch batteries then guess you need a Deus.

    Only joking....

Embarrassing is when you go to search for Spanish treasure after work and you cannot understand why your metal detector is going nuts until you get home and realize that you had your steel toe boots on !

    Hi Robinb,

Well, after some travels I'm back in the Office and ran a few tests for you today.

The hearing aid used was a PHONAK minimum metal with a tiny battery.

    CTX Settings:

    All Metal
    Auto Sens
    One Tone
    Response - Smooth

Result = audible signals but reading as FE 33 CO 47: FE 35 CO 47

    I hope this helps.
