    How Lucky We Are.

Looking at posts from overseas on the forum I realise how lucky we are in this country, We have a metalic history going back possibly 1000-2000 years (someone will tell me) yet Australia as an example as coinage going back for a guess no more than 250 years.
But on the downside America and Australia have the gold fields.

Your right about how lucky we are Dave,i love the history above the value of find's.Only the other day i found a small roman coin which is is great nick.I think it is a 1st century Trajan. To think it is 1900 year's old is brilliant to me. Still trying to get a true id of the bronze but love the buzz one get's of something so old etc.

As the Captain says, we really are lucky. Detectorists in the US for instance are pleased to find silver coins a hundred years old. We think little of such a find and move on looking for something older.

I touched on this in a recent blog post ... how fortunate we are in not having to detect tot lots, abandoned drive-in theatres and railroad tracks etcetera to get our hobby fix.

Yep, you UK guys are fortunate indeed! No doubt about it

Best we can hope for here and probably Australia too, is a few hundred year old coin and just hope its silver or a rare gold one so its not corroded beyond identification. The beach hunters here might have it a little better finding more precious metal jewelry in addition to coins.

    Its all relative.

Yes Captain, you're right about that. Lots of us in Australia and America I'm sure are very envious of the amazing finds and history up there in UK.
I count myself as very lucky to have had the opportunity to detect in UK a couple of times.
I'd say about 95 percent of detectorists here buy a gold detector and head for the Goldfields, and coin and relic detectors and detectorists are very much in the minority.

    Re: How Lucky We Are.

Sometimes you just don't realise how good we have it here in the UK. I consider this season to be a bit of a 'non starter' with new permissions producing little in the way of finds but just enough to keep me ticking over and looking forward to the next trip. Was only talking to someone the other day about my barren spell then a couple of days later out popped a 13th century cut half and a nugget of gold! and to be quite honest a nugget of gold wouldn't normally be in the top 100 of my 'expected' finds list. Every year over the last 3 years has produced at least a couple of finds that I never even dreamed of finding... gold quarter stater, gold quarter noble, potins, pilgrims ampula, cantii silver unit, seal matrix, gold nugget - yep - we are lucky here in the UK, lucky indeed

I suppose I'm lucky too in the sense that there are about 9 other detectorists besides me in the whole of Japan.

Hi Dave, just a note on the metallic history going back 1000-2000 years.
Excavating a Bronze Age burial site at the moment, maybe 1500-2000BC. !!!
Found bronze tweezers! shaving blade! etc.

    So we're around 4000 years.
Then there is Ötzi, he had a pure copper axe. 3300BC

A copper pendant found (can't remember where) dated 8700BC.

So now we're about 11000 years of heavy metal. Just gotta dig a bit deeper.
