    A grand day out!

Had a fantastic days detecting with my Brother on Sunday. A field we've been salivating over for almost a year finally had the crop off, so we set out. This whole site has yielded some great finds already, the fields all surround a small village dating back to Domesday and beyond, but we've not had any hammered coinage or anything earlier than Georgian out of it. This field was always favourite though being closest to the oldest buildings and with at least two footpaths running across it. I started out working one of these, and popping out plenty of coin from the get-go first signal being a cracking 1928 Penny. One of the first finds for my Brother he waved me across the field and met me half way saying "I'm not sure if this is what I think it is, see what you think..." and dropped a chunk of Roman fibula brooch into my hand! That's the first Roman either of us has had in Devon so far - very rare down here, so a great start. I had loads of coin and buttons as you can see, including two little silver sixpences 1917 and 1933 and a cracking counterfeit bullhead shilling (Top right) with quite a bit of silver still on it. Also another nice Royal Devon Yeomanry button (Second from this site) and a IV Queens own Hussars cap badge which isn't in the pic I just realised - groan! A strange little metal object which feels like I should know what it is, unsure if it's silver or not, any help with ID gratefully received. My Brother had to retire early due to running out of battery, and just as I made my way back to the car had another nice coin signal and out popped the first hammered - a 1609 James 1st sixpence! Even the wife and kids came out for Lunch for a picnic and we all had a nice meal together in the evening to round it all off - a perfect Sunday!

Wow, that's a good day out.

There is a village not far from you where (unpublished) Roman coins have been found in gardens. So despite the "lack of Roman" around there old paths close to the villages must be worth doing.
