Lets get rating and commenting on members' vids!

I'm surprised at how many great videos on MLOTV have very little (or no) ratings or comments. It takes an incredible amount of time to film and edit a video and I think taking a second or two to comment would inspire people to keep producing them for us. I'm not necessarily talking about myself (I've made a few) as I really enjoy making them and find they are their own motivation, but if I was a new member and I took the time to lug a camera around on my hunts, spend hours or days editing, only to have hundreds of views but zero ratings or comments I probably wouldn't bother with another (especially when a simple pic of your finds usually garners 10 to 20 responses). It might just inspire more people to pick up the video camera and get producing. So if you enjoy (or don't enjoy) the vids on MLOTV let everybody know! It just takes a second.

You are right and I must admit I am guilty as charged.

I love watching the videos and intend some day doing my own.

The problem is (for me at least) there are no comments on most and maybe only one or two comments on some others so I tend to not give leaving comments a thought!

Thinking about it now, I cannot remember seeing the 'option' to leave a comment standing out so never really bothered. Maybe a more prominent 'add comment' button would help? Just a thought.

If you look directly below each video there is a red bar that says Write Comment. You just type directly into that box. Fairly easy-to-see. To rate you just put the cursor over how many stars you want to give.

yeah i agree with you on this one a comment or a like/dislike can make a lot of difference to those of us who make videos.
i have about 27,000 views on my channel and only 180 comments and 160 ratings that means only one in a hundred and fifty people comment or rate.

Forget the dislike button I get enough of them on youtube I must admit tho it does make you feel like your not wasting your time seeing comments, after all the work that goes into making a mini production. I love working with video and its now become part of my metal detecting day out. And I believe most people now like to be in front of the camera, and as they get used to seeing it they become more natural in front of it. I dont think not having comments on any videos will put me off making them as the feed back I am getting in the field from members and other partys is enough for Me to keep rattling out hammer house of horror episodes..

I also agree with you, its nice to see videos of various rallies ect, but being open and honest speaking for myself and probably some other members I wouldnt have a clue how to put a video together and post it especialy to the quality of Daves (Cumbrian Fox) excellent efforts. I am off to Corfe on Monday and I will make an effort.
Then comes the other problem how to post a video. Perhaps if someone made a post explaining how to do this, more members might make an effort, I have made over 3500 posts and not a video amonst them.

You bring up a good point. I assume you're talking to Cumbrian Fox and not me (we're both Daves) but I do know that people have a legal right to complain and have your video removed if they are clearly-identifiable and have not given you their consent. Most people are cool with it however and would never take it that far but I believe that you should ask permission first before putting anybody up on YouTube just to cover yourself legally. Plus, as you said, some people simply don't want their image out there for all to see.

This is a tough one this actually...at some events (a metal detecting rally say) there may be many people walking around with video cameras so there's probably an understanding that everybody is going to be captured on somebody else's camera and people kind of expect that but still, legally-speaking, it just takes one person to flag your video or submit a privacy claim on YouTube and your video is gone. Maybe if I were at such an event I might just say, "Hey guys I'm going to make a video for the forums, do you mind if I film you guys and your finds?" before turning on the camera. Dave may have done that off camera, I have no idea.

What do others think on this subject? It's an interesting one for sure!

And Dave, like everybody else here I love your vids! In no way singling you out or anything, just responding to the good point Jon has raised as it affects all us amateur moviemakers out there.

Re: Lets get rating and commenting on members' vids!

A job I did for a very long time and still have a dabble in the CCTV industry which images which are recorded come under the realms of the data protection act. These camera are for safety and security purposes. But Videoing among friends and family is in my opinion harmless, but should a person object and doesnt want to take part for whatever reason there views should be respected, if people are videoed in the backgroud its harmless but if someone is with you and says no, no means no , some might say edit thier face so you cannot recconise them but thats not the point, some people just dont like it, they feel uncomfortable being filmed. I have seen staff resign because of that, not because they are affraid of them it is because they dont like being filmed, why I havent clue. The moral is if your doing something to someone and and they dont like it and ask you to stop, you should.
There is another point, on all properties where cameras are installed and being recorded, under the data protection act you have to display signs openly that there are cameras recording these signs are displayed to give people the choice of entering and being recorded or to walk away from them. It is also your right to ask for your images in certain circumstances to have your images removed.
Keep the videos comming in, I am going to attempt to do some at Corfe.

The problem with encouraging folks to make comments is that the author might not like any negative comments! They often put in a lot of effort and early attempts may be of very indifferent standard.

It seems to me to be common courtesy to ask before you film people and not assume that just because someone is at a rally that they will automatically assent. Personally I don't really know why anyone would want to watch a video of people detecting anyway! Are you going to learn anything?

Demonstrations of how deep particular detectors or coils perform, or their performance on particular types of object ( e.g. gold chains, cut quarters) are of interest. Comparisons of one detector against another are of interest if they are shot so carefully that there can be no possibility of rigging the results, it seems to me that that is very difficult to do and such attempts usually produce howls of "FIX" from owners of the machine that comes off worst.

Re: Lets get rating and commenting on members' vids!

Guys I did ask off camera after I filmed if I could use the footage especially with Stuart1975 who was the person you are talking about not liking cameras in the Bedford footage, and I also find that people who change their mind or do not want to be seen usually approach me and let me know at some point during the day. I always look through the footage and check for anything that could get people into trouble and cut it out. The videos are done to show the finds and the fun had by detector users and never to be used as incriminating evidence. To be honest as soon as I have introduced myself most people ask if I have brought my camera and ask for finds to be filmed. But I totally agree with what you are saying about a persons right not to be filmed, I meen look at all the crap thats going on with Kate and the paperazi at the moment.

But in future I will let people know when attending a rally that I will be taking the camera and make a point of asking before filming. I dont even need to get them on film, I only need to video the finds they have made. Thats if they want the finds showing on film, I love seeing peoples finds and I am sure others must do as well.

Really? You're the first person I've ever heard say that. There are many (many) out there who love to watch detecting videos, and yes, you can learn quite a lot from these kinds of videos. In their videos many are giving advice the entire time on techniques, settings, areas to hunt, signal sounds, etc. etc. Then there is the excitement of 'making finds' along with the person...the same reason people watch fishing/hunting/any kind of 'discovery' show I guess.

Hi Stewart! I've been detecting for 37 years and I note that you are 38 years old. I think I'm much more difficult to excite over watching others detect - it seems like I've been doing it a lifetime!
I have tried watching quite a few videos and I expect that I will try some more but (as a qualified old git) I usually become bored with them very quickly. Funnily enough I do the same with television also!
I'm going to have to watch it in the future - I might become a cynic.

Barrie I see where your coming from and as I am someone who likes to produce videos, its hard to make them so that they are not like "Seen one seen them all" in content, especially with metal detecting. I try to add a bit of humor as well as some interest to keep people watching and hope that my efforts are seen as such. Your one of the types of viewer I try to please, and it prevents me from going into the "well this will do" and "Throw a video up for the sake of throwing one up" way of thinking and most will agree having the same old format does become boring, even to me. I try not to do things the same way as everyone else when it comes to anything like this.

If people tell me what sort of format they like to see or what sort of content they like in the videos then I can adjust with a hope to keeping everyone who watches interested in some way, and make them even more enjoyable viewing. So with that in mind then leaving comments is a good thing. No matter how critical they are, I can take constructive criticism and learn from it.

Good comments gents. Barrie, I hear what you are saying....wow, you've been detecting as long as I've been alive...you're allowed to be a cynic. Love your posts by the way.

And PsychoDave...your videos rock. If you ever stop making them I'm personally coming to Cumbria (wherever that is...) and strongarming you into making more....heheh.

Stewart - you are too kind and forgiving! Thanks

Dave - ignore this miserable old git! It seems that everyone likes what you do and you enjoy doing it, so keep on a'troshin' as they say around these parts and I'll sneak a crafty look now and then!
