Unhappy CTX - wading in the water auto or manual

    CTX 3030
I was trying to use the ctx on the beach here in Stamford, CT and found when I use Manual I have to bring down the sensitivty really low to stop the heavy chattering. When I use auto the sensitivity it drops really low as well. I took of ground balance and still see the same issue. I am not getting the depth I used to on my Etac..Any suggestions or does anyone else have this issue??

When wading in water I usually switch to auto +3, GB off and auto-noise cancel.

On the beach I run it in GB off, auto noise cancel and run it in manual sensitivity.
I can usually run the sensitivity at 30 without any excessive noise.... but would turn it down to stabilise if necessary.

The manual (pg 22) recommends that Ground Balance NOT be enabled at the beach.

Okay, I mean manual ground balance switch off (un-ticked), using the preset (auto) setting.

It is what I was using in Norway recently..... but I'm sure most will be using more aggressive discrimination patterns.

Some one on Bournemouth is using the beach program in the water.
The CTX was a bit noises last night in the water, auto sensitivity tried + & - ground balance un ticked, tadpole, and the 17" coil,
    Any ideas

Problem with the 17" coil is that it's DEEP!

Pulled a pinky nail sized chard of copper out of a kneedeep hole at the beach.
ID was spot on, only needed something like manual sens 18 for a repeatable signal.

I've encountered spots where large deep iron has upset the CTX with 17" coil, Excal just walked over it.
I don't have any problems with running it at somewhat reduced sens, more that sensitive enough for my beach hunting.

Ground balancing and Noise canceling is not necessary on any of the Florida beaches that I have used the CTX on. The manual also tells you NOT to use Auto sensitivity on the beach but I have found Auto sensitivity works quite well, especially on really trashy beach sites and in stretches of water were discrimination is the name of the game.

Re: CTX - wading in the water auto or manual

I'm running auto sens much of the time, sometimes it gives a small signal.
Then switch over to manual sens something like 20.

Have had a few cases of really deep targets giving 01-30/35 readings, pinpointing gives a wide signal on the first sweep.
Any ideas? Large deep iron perhaps?

Re: CTX - wading in the water auto or manual

I have found that waching where the falsing lands, while using high manual sensitivity helps me in getting rid of most of the falsing. While hunting in either low trash or high trash and in manual, my machine constantly falsed in the 01-09 region. I used a 2x2 block and hit that area of the screen with some discrimination and the noise was suppressed. Since I'm guessing that 01-09 was not a critical area for good finds, I was able to sacrifice that part of the screen. I also disc'ed out 01-50 because of a slightly less noticible falsing there also. See what numbers your machine assigns to the false signals, and provided they are not in a critical area for gold, just disc them out. The machine is still a bit chatty, but goes much deeper in manual.

Thanks for the tips. So question pal, why run Auto? I always thought manual was the way to go on the beaches. It would appear that auto will cut down on the amount of depth. And what in tarnation is a tadpole program?

mr metaldetector - the tadpole is a minimum dicrimination pattern in the shape of a tadpole - its Gordans/Tony designed pattern and used widely with tweeked settings by alot of uk detectorists - who want to go deep and run the machine hot but better balanced for noisy ground - thats my understanding anyhow when i used the etrac
