Thread: Ideas to get more people posting and Involved.

  1. #26

Re: Ideas to get more people posting and Involved.

I think the opinion mentioning agressive reply,s Scott is more Generalised to be honest.

If people feel that they are being treated agressivly with regards to posts then id be hearing warning bells, and start listening as opposed to asking for specific intances.

Forums as you know Scott can be fickle areas to dwell, but the question has been asked and its obvoius activity on Mlo is not what it was and There are reasons for this and iv given some opinions.

The last thing i want is for a great forum like this to collapse for some simple reasons, and it may just take a bit of common sense to prevail to sort the problems out.

Communication on any forum should be uninhibited without the clutter that can choke them to the point you do not know where you are anymore.

Just another opinion and i know Gordon heritage knows exactly what i am talking about,no secrets their.

I hope this forum Flourishes, but at the same time i hope it becomes less cluttered and more user friendly.Sorry to rant on and on but feel very strongly about this.

One thing more i will Say is that Gary Brun was allways very open about opinions, and did listen to others and acted accordingly, even though i did not allways agree with everything he did or did not do.
    Long Live Mlo.

Being a newbie on here i have found the site easy to use and lots of friendly people with some great advise, the only problem i have had is uploading some pics of my finds from my i phone, being over 2mb they will not upload, other than that i like the site, I am also really interested in the corfe rally this year as i have a explorer xs thats never been used since i bought it last year, any info about corfe would be good.

I feel it is not (new) user friendly, and should be simplified.I even had to phone another User to ask how to make a new Post. How embarrasing is that.Lol
Im all for change and modernisation, but at what cost.
Its good to Talk,But even more important to listen.
You echoed my feelings entirely keith but unfortunately Gary had to move things on and it cost him a packet to do it. The forum just got too big and the server couldnt cope with it. I havent had ten pictures to post for ages but I guess that rule still applies. Maybe now the forum has new owners things like that can be looked at again. The biggest thing I have trouble with is keeping up with posts Ive made or been involved in, its an age thing a lot of the time When you think about it you only have to look in your profile and click on all posts you've made and it all comes flooding back. Yes I'm with you and others preferring the old layout but things had to change to keep things working. Gary had a nightmare job moving everything over to the new server, hats off to him for getting it all sorted for us else we would have had nothing.

Good to see some of the old guard again. always enjoyed your news posts Taggy so welcome. New forum is very good and although it seemed a massive change at first from the old one Gary and others put in a huge effort and their own money to keep it going, I know we are all thankful they did, but sorry Gary decided to leave.

With all the rain and fields under crop there is little opportunity for detecting at present, even the finds tables at the two clubs I belong to are a bit wanting, club sites are very limited now so I am not suprised not many finds are posted here at present, but it will change in the next couple of months, then there will be so many fields available the difficulty is knowing which one to hit first.

    Wow....
you see - the old guard is still here. There're just lurking in the shadows. The one that's being shy is Gary. Where's Gary?

The new format is much better. People, for the most part, don't like change. I was slow to navigate around, at first, but now, it's a breeze. I know exactly where to go and developed my "forum routine" to get on, see, post, and do something else.

ps..... picking up the CTX on Saturday. Wireless module, the whole kit. Tony, remember what we talked about?

i wish i had seen what mlo was like before because i think its bloody good now and i think the people who run this site have done an excellent job, i really wouldn't have wanted to be in their shoes the past few months!
the only thing that bugs me is that i cant post a picture strait from my pc to the forum i have to mess about uploading to photo bucket, that is the only reason i dont put up my photos.

Tend to agree with what you say Mike, very disappointed at time's to the amount of reply's to a post. You get load's of people view post's and hardly a response sometimes. It's as if you have to be outspoken to get a reply.Certain people get a response, other's nothing much,(why is this ?)In my mind Minelab make more than one detector worthy of a reply or two. This is how i feel sometime's

Well I never expected my post to be put out here as a sticky but I guess it was the right choice as many people are giving their valuable opinions. As for the old site vs. the new, I think I've grown so used to this one that I can't for the life of me remember what the old site was like!

I think the amount of information on the net now may also be a factor.
Years ago when you needed info you join a forum and then after you may stick around and chat......
Maybe now more are hitting utube and other sites for a quick fix and bypass the forums more and more - after all theres alot more forums now then a few years back....hence a lot more to choose which detracts from here...
    Just a thought.

Re: Ideas to get more people posting and Involved.

Well, I am one who was off here for a while. Mainly because I've been working like a slave at my sons
house. We ripped everything out, complete, windows, doors, concrete floor, walls, electric, etc etc blah blah.
That was at weekends and evenings. During the week working like a dog at archaeological excavations. ( I'm 60 in Nov and
was just too knackered to get to the forum)

As I got back to the forum it was completely new, and I didn't like the look of it, couldn't find a thing.
Scotty was a mod (he's a good lad), platinum plus???, and a load of people vomiting about the CTX and how they thought the tests should be done, and the tests were crap, and everything was crap, and a general smell of discontent. And Gary was the Booo man.
I was a bit shocked at all that. We all know there have been the odd squabbles now and then, but that what
was going on wasn't very British at all. Enough to scare anyone off.

I'm still not finding my way around (getting better though). Dunno what the two green numbers are at the top.
I think it was 2 days ago where I first read that Gary had "booked" all the platinum members in for 2012 without
them needing to pay a penny. He is a great guy and I hope I have the chance to meet him sometime again.
Nevertheless, because this is A GREAT FORUM, I paid for a platinum plus. At the moment my bank balance is
a bit in the red, but this forum is brilliant, AND I am not having it for nowt. AND I will also somehow get across
the channel this year to see the gang at Corfe again.(even if Tony Hunt has to lend me the money)

I too have also noticed that some people are missing, as Tony said a day or two ago - the great Karl Jackson for
    example. There are many more.
Now that this new machine which we all asked for ( better balance, GPS, coloured screen,
waterproof, faster recovery, wireless phones),is on the market and doing its job, things will settle down
and "dads army" will get mobile again.

Hoping this will stay the place to be.

Well if this old fella at my age can get around the site others should be far more accomplished at doing so.

As one of the original members of MLO and of Tony`s site before it I still like to contribute and read the threads.

I agree that Minelab did not help with their launch and that`s whats started all the trouble which hacked Gary off.

If Minelab had produced a machine that suited me I would have purchased one and until they do I will stick with what I have used for the last 2.5 years.

There are others who feel the same way as myself and have voted with their feet, but as I go back to the days of the trips to Calne and the Calne man found by Mushymanrob I have stayed with the ship.

As you know I was a platinum member but at 70 Gary allowed those over 70 a free membership but I kept contributing until I was 75,these days even as a senior Iam reduced to a basic membership with its limitations.

Well I guess thats life, nothing stands still for long and Gary is very much part of UKDFD so all is not lost to the hobby.

    Night All, Jerry.

I am also new, bit difficult at first as I was asking questions in old topics and causing a bit of confusion, I was not here for the old style forum. The negative views seem to have died down now and I think when a new machine comes out on any site people will look for the bad before they see the good. I have picked up 100`s of tips here that I may have spent weeks trying to work out for my self, so I guess I like it and the people here are very helpful and friendly.

    Bl##dy heck Karl,thats just greedy,great skills methinks!

Lots of valid points getting made here in the last couple of pages, this site has always had a warm 'club' type of feel to it,I think with all the changes & the of turmoil over the CTX on its release, fragmented that feel a little, but it is all setling back down to normal, these things will happen from time to time on a forum.
