    Anticipation.......

Well gents (and lasses) July should signal the start of the harvest. The big question is are most of us living in anticipation? New land? Old land but fields we haven't touched? Research giving real hopes of something special? Etc......

Me, well, a new farm that has a very good chance of producing 'lots' of roman coins rather than the odd pocket loss. An old farm with half it's fields still not even touched by me. And a farm that has only recently revealed a round house and enclosure on new 2012 satellite images to say I'm chomping at the bit would be an understatement, I can't wait. What about you lot ?

With a lake that you were fishing in, looks like a great way to pass the time away while waitng.

    Red face Re: Anticipation.......

I have 5 fields in crops next to a massive Iron age fort, waiting for the plow. There has been a few nice arrowheads and glass/bronze jewellery found there by an archaeological team in 1971. The land has never been detected. Also have a few fields next to the 12C manor house and doomesday church.

Also picked up a 3000 acre estate/manor with the remains of a medieval church right next to the main house. Two roman burial urns were found there in the 1990's by the previous owner. All pasture with just 3 fields still waiting to plow.

Had a cracking year so far with excellent response from a few very large estates. Good finds are hard here in Devon.

Have recently struck a lucky find in Cornwall with several Roman coins spread over two adjacent fields. 81 coins in total from the mid 2nd Century (Claudius Gothicus) including some beautiful condition silver denari. All currently being evaluated by the county museum who have served treasure papers on us!

Gotta get my camera fired up and post a few pics on here, my first 8 months detecting has been quite an adventure!

Would never have even considered a Minelab, let alone an E Trac until I discovered this site. We now have 3 Minelab machines in our family group!!!! converted!!!

Looks as though not many are excited at the prospect of getting out detecting this season!!!!

Deffo looking forward to harvest time. Back to fields that I know well and I must make time to explore new fields. I think I am going to take a week off in late August, early Sept and have 7 days solid detecting on 'virgin' and try to find some decent/interesting fields that I can concentrate on over winter. I am my own worst enemy,...I tend to return to fields that have produced over the years instead of checking out new land, but I suppose we are all guilty of that when we have restricted time to go detecting?

You need to be in front of him, not at the side

There are a couple of fields I just can't wait to get back to but last season taught me that really good stuff can come off well detected, hunted out or "useless" sites.

I've lost count of the number of "how the heck did we miss that!!" moments over the last couple of years.
    Finding ancient rubbish since 1977.

No Roman or other 2000 year old coins here!

Mostly corn with some soybean crops around here. The farmers usually let the corn dry up until late-late Summer or Fall then harvest. Some don't plow til the next Spring leaving the whats left after Harvesting for cattle or other wildlife like deer, pheasants, etc. to pick on.
Since deer hunting is big around here, one has to be careful where one detects. Dam deers are so plentiful around here, i had 3 deer-car encounters over the years. Counted a herd of 23 of em no more than a 100 yards from my property line. Can't even run my dogs in my woods in the Summer because of deer ticks. Sorry about the deer rant, got carried away!

I got my eye and permission to hunt a nearby sand hill in the middle of a corn field where an early 1900's school once stood along with gone homesteads on the same field. There are other similar sites i need to get permission to hunt once they're plowed.
Also other promising sites on the river where the brush is too thick to hunt in the Summer. With those sites maybe after the first couple frosts or for sure early next Spring.

Only got 23 new estate farms to choose from. There is good news & bad in that...... its taken almost 3 years to get it signed & sealed now I haven`t got a scooby where to start. Fortunately I have a plan. Where ever the harvest starts!! Landowner is signed up until 2022 as well.

And theres the rally season to fit in as well!!

I'm sure you have done enough research to narrow things down a bit? I just hope it doesn't take you three years to find your first hot spot. You must be more excited than I am for the new season to start? My first port of call will be a new field with a new and unknown round house with an enclosure and more importantly it's un-detected. In my dreams it's an area of religious offerings but realistically it's your bog standard roundhouse, but who cares as long as I find something?

Looking forward to harvest time and can't wait.Have only got out on grass land a couple of time's in 2-3 month's.Still waiting for grass to be cut, very late round here.I have alot of arable land and as said you tend to stick to researched field's or area's which have produced. This can sometimes be a bad thing as to tend not to detect other area's you might have. This was the case 2 year's ago on a 50 acre + field,to start with it produced nothing.I went back a few times and nothing, the size of the field was a bit offputting but it slowly started to produce. It is probably one of my best field's now with coin's and other item's going back though each century to roman time's.Sometime's doubtful field's can produce, you just have to give them a go.Any way i am itching to get going and report back,Dave.

In my defence I would say that when I get into the 'zone' I will often dig signals that most people would & do ignore,...don't always believe what the machine is telling you!! At the end of the day its only another hole until you fill it in.
