I've had cheap Argos specials coming in with those sort of numbers, they can often be quite fragile after a while in the sea. Very distinctive signals.

Should be OK, The e-trac works fine under power lines, it does pick them up but even at its worse you can carry on detecting with the occasional "noise cancel" when it gets noisy.
A very quick alternative, put them in a saucer of Viakal limescale remover, take them out and rinse them as soon as they change colour, this could be just a couple of seconds, then a quick rub with...
